Gateway (Poway, CA) (www.gateway.com)
recently introduced a new 30-inch HD-ready LCD-TV, touting a lifetime
of 50K hours, according to Home Video News. This is the first
new TV introduction from Gateway since it left the CE business
last year and decided to rededicate itself to the computer category.

The SHD-3010 offers 170-degree viewing angle,
weighs just 30.9 pounds and is only 4 inches deep. A variety
of input sources includes two composite, two component, S-video,
RGB, DVI, RJ-11, RF, four RCA audio in and PC audio. The LCD-TV
also has a built-in NTSC tuner for viewing standard analog
TV signals and two built-in 5W speakers
and it works
with multiple external devices, such as DVD players.
Gateway does not have a separate retail partner lined up to
sell the TV, but the company hopes to land one, said Kenneth
Walker, Gateway's senior director of convergence platforms.
One major policy change is that the company will no longer
try to gain market share through low pricing. Instead, Gateway
will offer more value, said Walker. "Disruptive pricing
works when you own your whole distribution chain, but does
not work as well when you are dealing with other retailers,"
he said. |
Gateway said the TV introduction is not the start of a new large-scale
venture into CE, but part of its strategy to deliver devices that
work well with its core computer products. In this case, the TV
is being marketed as a potential adjunct to Gateway's Media Center
PCs.
Gateway has also hinted that it might refresh its PDP-TV line as
well, according to TWICE. The company sells two 42-inch plasma TVs,
along with 26-inch and 23-inch LCD-TVs, on its Web site, but these
essentially are leftover designs from Gateway's previous business
plan, receiving only modest upgrades since introduction.
Gateway all but left the consumer electronics space last year
after rolling out more than 100 products that were to sell through
its Country Store retail chain. The experiment failed to gain
much traction and was eventually put to bed after Gateway acquired
entry-level PC maker eMachines last March. The company found it
could not sell its CE products through other retailers and decided
to go back to being a full-time PC vendor.
