Near-to-Eye Technology and Market Report Released

02.11.2003

The explosive growth of the camcorder and digital still camera markets continues to drive the evolution of near to eye markets and the technology of small microdisplays. But after surviving the burst of the high-tech bubble, a wiser and stronger group of innovators are reviving interest in embedded and headset near-to-eye displays.
Insight Media's (www.insightmedia.info) new report describes the resurgence and forecasts the revival. Called the Near-to-Eye Technology and Market Report, the study provides market and technology insight to designers, component suppliers, investors and executives. It includes analysis and data on technology and product development, as well as the market potential for microdisplay-based products in the near-to-eye sector.
Microdisplays can be used in two broad classes of applications: projection and near-to-eye. Near-to-eye products that employ microdisplays include electronic viewfinders in digital cameras and camcorders, head-mounted display (monocular and binocular) and a number of additional applications in vertical markets such as test & measurement, sporting, military, fire & rescue, security and more.

The report includes the following:

· Viewfinders and Embedded Near Eye Display Market Forecast & Analysis
· Headset Forecast & Analysis
· Near-to-Eye System Integration
· Microdisplay Company Profiles

The first section of the report analyses the use of microdisplays in digital camcorders and cameras, as well as emerging product categories like Internet appliances and advanced cell phones, which will use microdisplays in the near future. A forecast of unit and revenue growth indicates that electronic viewfinders will dominate the market in the near term, but that 3G infrastructures will drive the growth of microdisplays by the middle of the decade.
In the headsets section, demand continues to be sluggish for 2003, but could accelerate rapidly starting in 2004, led by lower-cost entertainment headsets. Already, SVGA-class binocular headsets are priced in the mid $600 range and will push demand as they fall below $500.

Both of the forecast sections include a review of demand-pull and supply-push trends, future market performance requirements and pricing trends, technology market share forecast, as well as a cost and competitive positioning analysis.

The NTE system integration section has detailed information about the issues involved with designing and producing microdisplay-based NTE products. There is also a comprehensive review of commercial and developmental products. This includes digital cameras and camcorders, monocular and binocular headsets and other near-to-eye products such as information appliances, medical instrumentation, weapon sights, thermal imaging and field instrumentation. A comprehensive cost analysis of several products is also included.
The final section provides complete company profiles on the providers of microdisplays for near-to-eye products. Each profile includes an assessment of the company's strengths and weaknesses, competitive position, strategies for product development and manufacturing, customer relations and panel specs and roadmaps. Included are CRL Opto, Displaytech, eMagin, Kopin, Microdisplay Corporation, Microemissive, Planar, Sanyo, Silicon Display, Sony and Three-Five Systems.

"This report provides an excellent snapshot of the near-eye microdisplay product market. It's a real time saver in getting up-to-speed on what's in the market in terms of real microdisplay OEM products, product prototypes and introductions, microdisplay technology R&D, and business initiatives," notes Rainer Kuhn, sr. director sales and marketing at Three Five Systems' Personal Display Systems Business Unit.

The 183-page Near-to-Eye Technology and Market Report is available as a pdf file for $2,500.
