JVC (Wayne, NJ) (www.jvc.com)
announced a new generation of HD RPTVs based on the company's
D-ILA microdisplay device, which it says is the highest density
microdisplay device available. The first two D-ILA rear projection
sets will be HDTV monitors in 52- (HD-52Z575) and 61-inch (HD-61Z575)
screen sizes. Both feature 1280 x 720 pixels, three 0.7-inch D-ILA
devices, and a 94% aperture ratio and include JVC's exclusive
Digital Image Scaling Technology (D.I.S.T.) and the company's
Four-Point Color Management system. Look for these in July.
In Q3'04, JVC will offer sister products with the same screen
sizes, but with a fully integrated digital tuner solution featuring
a ATSC tuner, a unidirectional CableCARD systems for digital-cable-ready
capability, IEEE1394 for connection to D-VHS recorders and home
networking systems and an Easy Programming Grid.
The LCOS panels that will power these RPTVs will be the new all-digital
panel that is the result of a recent collaboration between JVC
and Aurora Systems. Aurora will supply its all-digital backplane
design to JVC as a patterned and finished silicon wafer. JVC will
add is proprietary VAN-mode liquid crystal processing and packaging.
"Microdisplay rear-projection TVs have been well received
by U.S. consumers," said Dan McCarron, national product specialist,
Display Division. "JVC enters this category with exclusive
technologies that deliver superior performance and that have already
proven themselves in terms of performance and reliability in JVC
front projectors."
JVC says its D-ILA chip offers the highest resolution of any device
this size, and it's the smallest offering at this resolution.
The three-chip structure can continuously reproduce a flicker-
and burn-free picture, and the company says an invisible pixel
structure ensures that there are no color or motion artifacts,
while true analog grayscale provides outstanding gradations of
black. Vertical alignment of the liquid crystal layer improves
brightness and contrast (500 lumens and 1000:1 on demo), and for
reliability, an optically stable inorganic alignment layer is
used, which doesn't yellow over time, allowing for longer device
life. In fact, the company says it stopped testing at 100K hours.
We saw quite a bit of motion and pixel structure on the demo at
CES, but were told that this set uses an older chip whereas the
production model will feature a new LSI chip and next-generation
D.I.S.T., and be thinner.
At the company's press briefing, we were told the goal is to grab
5-10% market share in this projected 1.4M-unit segment this year.
D.I.S.T., which can be used with any technology by adapting the
driver, can alleviate traditional difficulties in getting the
color right with plasma and retaining detail with LCDs. In the
case of D-ILA RPTV, D.I.S.T. upconverts the signal to 720p through
the use of exclusive algorithm technology. Jaggies from the original
source are smoothed and vertical resolution is enhanced. In terms
of color management, four points from the color spectrum are selected
and adjusted separately. Since U.S. TV signals are based on CRT's
color spectrum, this technology allows JVC to optimize the colors
for a broader spectrum, particularly in plasma products.
JVC's "Natural Progressive" picture improvement technology
optimizes signal quality before the picture is displayed on the
screen. This doubles the image data in each field, and uses advanced
3D interpolation to display a solid image, says JVC, without any
noticeable scanning lines, jagged edge noise or image trails.
Also, Dynamic Gamma Correction adjusts brightness and contrast
independently in specific areas of the image, rather than an overall
approach.
An HDMI-compatible input with HDCP (High Definition Content Protection)
is included. Other inputs include three S-Video (two rear, one
front) inputs and four AV inputs (three rear, one front).
