Japanese Big-Screen TV Report Offered Through Insight Media

07.14.2003

Insight Media and Techno Systems Research (TSR) have teamed up to offer the English version of TSR's new big-screen TV report. The report is called "Home Projector: Positioning Front/PTV in the Large Panel Era." Despite the home projector title, the report covers all aspects of front and rear-projection TV technologies, costs and production as well as positioning of these with respect to LCD- and PDP-TVs in consumer markets.
TSR is based in Japan and has provided an excellent analysis of the technologies and markets that will shape big-screen displays in the future. Many technologies are vying to replace CRT-based projection and direct-view displays and the 138-page report provides a rigorous evaluation of the prospects for the big-screen TV market. It is organized into six major areas:

· Market Analysis
· Price Comparison
· Cost Breakdown
· Competitive Analysis
· Front/RPTV Component Analysis
· Manufacturer Case Studies

Overall, TSR sees significant growth in all big-screen TV technologies, but the market share and total unit shipments are a bit less certain to predict. As a result, TSR has devised a two-scenario approach to its forecast.

For scenario 1, TSR based its results upon numerical data collected through interviews with manufacturers of the various technologies. This forecast assumes little competition will occur among the technologies and that direct-viewing CRT TVs, which currently number about 100M units, will smoothly drop to about 90M units in the forecast period. This is shown in the chart.

In scenario 2, TSR assumes that LCD-TVs below 30 inches will significantly replace direct-viewing CRT TVs. Scenario 2 leads to faster replacement of CRT-RPTVs, but a smaller overall RPTV market (5.5M units in 2006 vs. 7.1M units for scenario 1) and smaller front projection market (3.5M vs. 5.1M).

For either scenario however, Japanese producers of CRT-RPTVs will quickly move to microdisplay-based RPTV technologies to achieve higher margins.

TSR is among the most bullish forecasters for the front home projector market basing its forecast on penetration into the anticipated installed base of DVD players, digital still cameras and camcorders, as well as an end-user survey and production plans and price reductions from manufacturers. However, it feels the market potential is there for these big-screen displays based upon the above analytical approach. Of the 5.1M front home projector units forecast for 2006 in scenario 1, fully 80% are expected to sell for less than $1,000, so low prices and other factors will drive growth.

Other sections of the report provide a wealth of detailed data about costs, supply chain, manufacturing, markets and competitive positioning.
