LG.Philips to Launch 42-inch LCD Panel

10.10.2002

LG.Philips LCD Co., Ltd (Seoul, Korea) (www.lgphilips-lcd.com) is upping the ante in the big-screen TV market. It now plans to introduce a 42-inch wide-aspect LCD panel to compete toe-to-toe with plasma panels in this size range.

Last May, the company began offering a WXGA 30-inch LCD panel with wide viewing, brightness of 450 nits, and 400:1 contrast.

Like the 30-inch model, the new 42-inch panel is being offered to system integrators to use it in HDTV products. It has 1280 x 768 resolution and leverages the company's proprietary S-IPS (Super-In-Plane-Switching) technology to produce an impressively wide viewing angle of more than 175 degrees. Brightness is speced at 500 cd/m2, response time is a fast 12ms, and contrast comes in at 500:1. The panel itself is only about 2 inches thick.

Volume production of the new, world's-largest TFT-LCD is slated to commence in the second half of 2003. Evidently, the company plans to use its second 5G TFT-LCD line, which processes 1100 × 1250 mm substrates. This line is slated to become operational in the first half of 2003. Output from the first 5G line reached the one million panel mark in September 2002 after starting production in March. Yields are reported at over 80% on the line, which is mostly geared toward making 18.1-inch panels. Capacity is 60K substrates per month.

LG.Philips LCD will demonstrate the 42-inch display at the Korea Electronics Show (KE Show) in Seoul from October 8-12, and at LCD/PDP International in Yokohama, Japan from October 30-November 1.
