Compact Arc Lamp Powers 3-lb. DLP Projectors
07.14.2003
OSRAM Photo-Optic (Berlin, Germany) (www.osram.de)
has introduced a dramatically compact new arc lamp in their P-VIP line
of high-pressure mercury illumination systems.
The new compact 180W 1.0 mm lamp for DLP front projection has a 52 x
56mm reflector and a driver board that is only 135 x 50 x 26.5mm. Lifetime
is rated at 2,000 hours.
Pricing depends on the type of lamp, but the basic lamp driver design
is for high-performance systems and will be priced in the $145 range.
The first adoption of this lamp technology was in Philips' new 3.5-pound
DLP projector, LC5341/31, which we saw in operation oat InfoComm. The
exquisitely compact lamp and ballast combination fit snugly together
in an easily replaceable configuration. The 2.8 x 9.3 x 7.7-inch projector
puts out 1700 lumens from the 180W bulb.

Osram has obviously beaten Philips to the punch
on small-sized illumination systems in this application. No
official word, but reports are out that Philips expects to
have a 180W 1.0mm arc lamp available by year's end.
Bernd Schaefer, senior vice president and managing director
of Osram's Photo-Optic Division said in a press briefing at
InfoComm that their company will soon have "infinite"
manufacturing capacity" for its arc lamps. Presently,
Osram manufactures in the P-VIP lamps in two locations. One
is at their Berlin headquarters where new automated production
equipment is installed. The other plant is in Kakegawa, Japan,
a joint venture with Mitsubishi and Toshiba to make Osram-branded
P-VIP lamps. 40% of the production comes from Berlin and 60%
comes from Japan, according to Schaefer. Osram says that it
is the "number one lamp supplier" for DLP systems
worldwide.
Other members of the new family of 1.0mm arc lamps include
the PT VIP 120W lamp for next generation RPT, a 250W SCR-enhanced
lamp for DLP, and a PT VIP 200W lamp for small LCD projectors.
Osram also has a new 300W/1.3mm-arc lamp with an output of
10,000 lumens and a lifetime of >1000 hrs.
According to Dr. Bernd Straehler, key account manager for
Osram's Videoprojection Lamp Systems, the RPTV lamp with 1.0mm
electrode gap will have a 6000-hour lifetime in the beginning
but further upgrades are under way.
