PureDepth Shows New Monitors

PureDepth (Redwood City, CA) (www.puredepth.com) is the new name for the 3D company formerly known as Deep Video Imaging. The new company, still based out of New Zealand, now has offices here in the US, and was at CES to show off a new line of monitors.

PureDepth has developed what it calls "Multi-Layer Displays (MLDs)." This concept involves overlaying two LCD screens separated by a short distance to create the third depth dimension. Incoming images are then separated into foreground and background components for display on the two LCD panels.

Since this is not a stereoscopic 3D approach, MLD displays overcome issues of convergence (the combination of left- and right-eye images), motion parallax (the relative movement and position of one object in front of or behind another), and restrictions in the viewing angle common to most stereoscopic 3D displays. The MLD display is covered by a wide spectrum of pending and granted patents.

The company says such displays are suitable for the majority of office, visualization, process control and presentation software applications.

On display at CES was a 17-inch monitor (MLD 3000) that features twin SXGA resolution LCD panels. Each panel offers 18-bit depth color processing, with the integrated monitor offering 100 cd/m2 of brightness, 400:1 contrast, and a 16 ms response time. The viewing cone is speced at 140H and 110V. This is available now for $1,799.

The 19-inch MLD 4000 monitor offers the same twin SXGA resolution with brightness of 200 cd/m2, contrast of 400:1, and full 24-bit color processing with a 16 ms response speed. The viewing cone is 140H by 140V. This will be available in March for $2,499.
A 7-inch model is also available for $1,000.
