The Need:

CES 2011 saw the debut of passive polarized 3D HDTVs from a number of key worldwide brands. These new 3D products will change the landscape for 3D HDTVs in 2011 and beyond. They allow for the use of low cost polarized glasses instead of the heavier and much more expensive shutter glasses. But the passive 3D HDTVs do have lower 2D and 3D image performance, so which will consumers prefer? This is the key industry need this report seeks to address.

Key Findings:

After extensive market, technology and consumer expectations analysis around 3D HDTVs, the report finds:

Methodology:

Our approach to forecasting the 3D HDTV market in 2011 is to create three separate, but linked reports. These reports will focus on:

The passive polarized and autostereoscopic reports will provide details on TV technology, competitive position, market development factors and purchase decision parameters. Figure 1 describes the specific analyses that will be done in this report for passive polarized 3D HDTVs. Similar analysis will also be done in the rolled-up 3D HDTV report for shutter glass solutions, in addition to analysis for passive polarized and autostereoscopic solutions.

Figure 2: Flow Chart of Common Forecast Analysis

The technology-specific Market Position analyses on shutter glass, passive polarized and autostereoscopic (Figure 1) are used as inputs to the top level forecast analysis methodology, as shown in Figure 2.

In the Market Potential block, we determine the Total Available Market (TAM) for TVs, then adjust this market for sizes above 30", which are the most likely candidates for inclusion of 3D capability. This TAM is then distributed into 7 different regions:

In the Market Penetration block, we start with an analysis of other consumer electronics products with the goal of identifying products that can serve as models for an optimistic and a conservative forecast. These models are converted into penetration into sales numbers, which can now be easily multiplied by the Adjusted TAM to obtain the Optimistic and Conservative forecasts. These forecasts define the range of expected forecast.

The expected forecast is not derived from a formula, but rather from the outputs of a series of analyses. The top level forecasts (optimistic, conservative and expected) are broken down into the following categories:

These top-level technology forecasts are forecasted separately in each of the seven regions as adoption will be different in each region. This is the common output.

For the Passive 3D HDTV report, we forecast the following technologies:

These four sub-technology approaches will have optimistic, conservative and expected forecasts and in all seven regions.
